4 Years Since Medical Billing and Coding Certification – Do I Need to Renew Certification?

It’s been four years since I got my medical billing and coding certification, I’m not working at it yet but I want to know if I need to renew my certification?

I know it’s been a long time since I got my certificate, I’m still looking for one but like you said it not easy to get one without experience, and its frustrating for me and for my husband!

Most all reputable certification organizations require maintaining Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) every year and maintaining membership to maintain certification. Depending on where you obtained certification – AMBA, AAPC, AHIMA, etc. – most of them have similar CEU and membership renewal requirements that have to be maintained.

In your case since it’s been 4 years, I think most organizations would require reinstatement. For example AAPC members whose membership lapses more than 90 days without requesting and obtaining approval for a hardship plan have to follow the reinstatement procedures which includes passing the examination again.

I would encourage you to check with the organization that awarded your certification and see what their renewal/reinstatement policies are.
